July 5, 2014, 9:30 am: A fishing encounter between an ocean swimmer and a juvenile great white shark

I am forwarding Randy's email and video clip along with pictures I took today at the MB Pier, looking south and then north to 18th Street.  As you can see, today was one of the most crowded days at the beach since we moved here in 1988 and less than a day after an encounter between an ocean swimmer and a 7- foot juvenile great white shark.

Tom, Cedric and I swam in the ocean this morning from 18th Street to 30th Street and back.  There were many stand up surfers but we did not see any other ocean swimmers.

The ocean conditions were ideal and the ocean very calm with very little current to the north.  As usual, Jim was a "no-show" with no excuses.  Every other 18th Podder were out of town with excuses.

What a beautiful day to swim and it's too bad the incident yesterday is being reported as a shark attack.  It wasn't and there were warnings to the swimmers near the pier but they could not hear.  The shark was fighting for its life and not in a good humor at all.  The incident was an unfortunate accident and I hope the fisherman is held responsible.  The injured swimmer was released from the hospital yesterday, a few short hours after he was admitted.

Chuck - How was the swim?  I was running late so I drove over and was
planning to park at the police station but the lot was closed due to the bike race so I went to MCC.  I saw Jim at the pool an he said he hadn't seen this video so here it is for the group.

Hopefully fishing is prohibited from the pier beyond the 8th....

If we do swim tomorrow which is likely we will continue to swim from 18th St north to 30th Street or so and certainly stay away from the pier and fishermen....

Sounds like the shark was hooked by a fisherman and was not a happy camper.  This makes me wonder about continuing to swim around the pier when there are fishermen there.

In order to get Jim to church on time (solo tenor) and avoid hungary sharks who attack later in the morning, we are planning another ocean swim tomorrow Sunday, this time at 7 am.  It is hoped that Patrick will join us for tomorrow's swim since he has a good eye for great whites.....
