October 8, 2017 Big Waves

These pics were taken on Saturday, Oct 7 before some of us aborted our swim the next morning when the waves and surf were even stronger at 8 am.

So around 8 am, those swimmers present were Tim, Andy, Brian and his son Mathew with his drone taking pics, Jon, Jim, Don, Julie and me getting ready when a lifeguard truck shows up.  Not a good sign, but we waived him on saying we were all strong swimmers, but up to a point as we later learned.

Mr. Hallett was the first to wimp out, followed closely by Julie, then me then Don.  Tim by then was pretty much thru the hard stuff and 200 yards out, followed by Andy who avoided a surfer and got pounded before he got beyond the breakers, and Brian whose goggles were ripped off and snapped, and Jon who was being swept northward by the extremely fast rip current.  Brian and Andy came back to join us wimped out swimmers, Tim swam back in and got a great wave and Jon walked back.

In the end Tim and Jon braved the high surf and swam to the Marine buoy and back to 18th Street.  Tim and Jon certainly qualified as 18th Street Pod Hard Core Swimmers today.

I am hoping to get drone pics from Mathew of our group in and around the water and will post them later.

When we came back to Chuck's house, we looked back and noticed the ocean was calm but next door neighbor Mike said he had surfed for over 3 hours and found today as one of the best surfing day in a long time.
